The Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) is committed to advancing high-quality, safe ambulatory health care through an independent, peer-based accreditation program founded on nationally recognized Standards. Because questions occasionally arise regarding the relationship between accreditation and operational decisions made by accredited organizations, AAAHC believes it is important to clarify the role of accreditation.
AAAHC Accreditation evaluates an organization’s compliance with established Standards designed to promote quality, patient safety, regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement. As part of the peer-based survey process, experienced Surveyors evaluate an organization’s policies, practices, and systems against those Standards while also providing educational observations, practical insights, and suggestions drawn from their expertise. These discussions are intended to support continuous improvement and organizational learning. They are not directives regarding an organization’s clinical or business operations.
Decisions regarding whether to offer, modify, expand, or discontinue specific clinical services remain the responsibility of each accredited organization. Those decisions are based on the organization’s assessment of patient needs, available clinical resources, applicable laws and regulations, financial and operational considerations, and organizational priorities. While accreditation Standards may influence how services are delivered or governed, they generally do not determine which clinical services an organization elects to provide.
To promote public understanding, AAAHC encourages accredited organizations to clearly distinguish between their own operational decisions and accreditation requirements when communicating about changes to clinical services. Clear communication helps ensure that patients, stakeholders, regulators, and the public have an accurate understanding of the distinct roles of health care organizations and independent accrediting bodies.
The integrity and independence of the accreditation process are fundamental to public trust. AAAHC remains committed to providing objective, evidence-based accreditation that helps organizations strengthen quality, improve patient safety, and foster continuous improvement while respecting each organization’s responsibility for its own clinical, operational, and strategic decisions.
