Prepare for Version 44 Standards

AAAHC is delighted to announce the upcoming release of version 44 Standards for all programs. In March, AAAHC hosted a 30-day public comment period for the Standards and welcomed input on the proposed changes from organizations, Surveyors, professional associations, and the public. Stay tuned for further communication on the planned release and effective dates.

The substantive v44 Standards changes primarily focus on two key areas: patient-centered care and state-specific scope of practice. In addition to these focus areas, AAAHC made minor changes to enhance clarity, minimize administrative burden, and reduce redundancy. Finally, v44 will also include minor revisions to the Medicare Deemed Status (MDS) Physical Environment Checklist (PEC) Standards.

AAAHC’s commitment to quality, patient-centered care
AAAHC firmly believes every individual should have access to quality health care, regardless of their background or circumstances. The v44 Standards aim to elevate these concepts and unify requirements across AAAHC programs.

The proposed revisions to the Standards reflect this commitment, with a strong emphasis on ensuring quality at the patient level. Specifically, these revisions highlight the following key areas:

  • Patient education: Empowering patients with the information necessary to make informed health decisions
  • Data collection: Enhancing data practices to better serve patient needs and improved outcomes
  • Scope of services: Ensuring that services are comprehensive and aligned with patient expectations and needs
  • Cultural and religious considerations: Acknowledging and respecting personal, cultural, and religious beliefs in care delivery
  • Preferred communication: Supporting diverse communication preferences to ensure effective patient-provider interactions

State specific scope of practice
States vary in their definition of practitioner scope of practice. AAAHC Standards recognize that qualifications are determined by virtue of education, experience, competence, professional licensure, and the state laws, rules, and regulations that govern. The changes reflect evolving practice and will allow organizations more flexibility to designate qualified practitioners, in line with the qualifications above and governing body approval.

MDS Physical Environment Checklist updates
Version 44 also includes improvements to the Medicare Deemed Status Physical Environment Checklist (PEC) Standards. None of the changes are substantive as the applicable NFPA codes have not changed. These minor revisions will reduce redundancy and improve clarity, allowing organizations to better understand the specific cited issues and, therefore, how to implement improvements.

How do I learn more about v44 Standards changes?
AAAHC will host complimentary webinars that address details about changes to the Standards following release of v44 later this year. AAAHC will notify all organizations directly and share information via the website.

Toolkit Spotlight: Obesity and Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Caring for patients with obesity and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in ambulatory surgery settings presents unique challenges that demand heightened awareness and meticulous management. As the prevalence of both conditions rises, health care professionals must prioritize patient safety and optimize outcomes.

Ambulatory surgery considerations for OSA patients
Increased risk of complications:

  • Obesity complicates anesthesia administration, surgical procedures, and postoperative recovery.
  • OSA significantly increases the risk of respiratory depression, airway obstruction, and cardiovascular events.

Preoperative assessment and planning:

  • Conduct thorough preoperative assessments to identify patients at high risk.

Postoperative monitoring and care:

  • Monitor patients closely postoperatively to detect early signs of respiratory distress or other complications.
  • Prioritize non-opioid analgesics for pain management, when possible.

Patient education and follow-up:

  • Provide patients with clear instructions on postoperative care.
  • Facilitate communication between the surgical team and the patient’s primary care physician.

By implementing the strategies found in the toolkit, ambulatory surgery centers can significantly improve the safety and well-being of patients with obesity and OSA, ensuring successful outcomes and minimizing potential complications.

AAHC offers additional information on this topic in the Ambulatory Surgery Considerations for Obesity and Obstructive Sleep Apnea Toolkit. This guide includes a decision-making chart when selecting a patient with obesity and OSA for ambulatory surgery. To learn more about AAAHC Toolkits, visit the website here.

MEN’S HEALTH WEEK 2025: Prioritizing Well-being

Men’s Health Week runs from June 9 to 15, the week leading to Father’s Day. This annual observance aims to heighten the awareness of preventable health issues and promote early detection and treatment among men of all ages. The focus includes physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

Concentration on urology
Urological health is a critical component of men’s overall well-being. During Men’s Health Week, it is essential to emphasize the importance of this area of men’s health. This includes:

  • Prostate health: Regular prostate exams and screenings for early detection of prostate cancer
  • Testicular health: Self-exams and awareness of testicular cancer symptoms
  • Kidney health: Maintaining healthy kidney function through proper hydration and lifestyle choices
  • Erectile dysfunction: Addressing this common issue with open communication and professional medical advice

It is important that men understand that urological health conditions are very common, and that many treatment options are available.

How does an organization promote men’s health?
AAAHC Standard CMC.110 requires that patients are educated regarding their condition or illness and includes education regarding appropriate preventative measures.

Men’s Health Week 2025 is a call to action for men to prioritize their health and well-being. By embracing preventative care, adopting healthy habits, and seeking timely medical attention, men can lead healthier and more fulfilling lives.

AAAHC Surveyors Drive Excellence in the Accreditation Journey

Are you an educator at heart and want to share your expertise with other ambulatory care colleagues navigating the accreditation process? If so, consider joining AAAHC’s cadre of high- achieving Surveyors.

Through the accreditation/certification process, AAAHC Surveyors enhance an organization’s performance and guide facilities in their continuous focus to deliver safe, quality patient care. AAAHC Surveyors are medical and administrative professionals, including nurses, doctors, and administrators with firsthand experience and expertise in surgical, primary care, and business operations in a variety of outpatient settings. Their clinical experience covers a wide range of specialties, from anesthesiology and endoscopy/gastroenterology to primary care, dentistry, and student health. These individuals approach each survey as a peer bringing an educational perspective—not a “gotcha” attitude.

Surveyors hold responsibility for onsite, pre- and post-survey activities

  • Review client information before and during the onsite survey
  • Collaborate with other Surveyors and AAAHC headquarters staff
  • Interact closely with clients while onsite
  • Assess compliance with AAAHC Standards and other regulations while onsite
  • Prepare comprehensive survey reports including both compliance and consultative commentary
  • Review client Plans of Correction (POC) as necessary

This year, AAAHC will begin Clinical Surveyor recruitment in the third quarter for the next training class in the Fall. These efforts will support business needs and bolster AAAHC’s ability to deliver a quality survey experience.

At the time of hire, Surveyor candidates must be practicing in an ambulatory health care organization. They also must have current or prior direct involvement with the accreditation process.

We welcome inquiries and referrals. Contact AAAHC Surveyor Services with questions via email at Careers@aaahc.org or Surveyor@aaahc.org.
